Potassium Permanganate: Industrial chemistry

Potassium permanganate – Pest control agent, Wood pickling agent, Wood stain, Antiseptic, Oxidizing agent in organic chemistry and industrial synthesis.

Potassium permanganate – dark purple crystals with a metallic sheen. Refractive index σ 1.59 (at 20°C). It dissolves in water, forms a dark purple solution, in liquid ammonia, acetone (2:100), methanol, pyridine. Strong oxidizer. Depending on the pH of the solution, it oxidizes various substances, being reduced to manganese compounds of various oxidation states. Aqueous solutions of potassium permanganate are thermodynamically unstable, but kinetically quite stable. Their safety increases dramatically when stored in the dark.

Applications of potassium permanganate

Potassium permanganate is most often based on the high oxidizing ability of the permanganate ion, which provides an antiseptic effect.

  • In medicine, as an antiseptic, for gargling, washing wounds, treating burns, etc.
  • In pharmacology (it has an astringent, irritant, cauterizing and tanning effect). It also has a deodorizing effect.
  • An alkaline solution of potassium permanganate washes laboratory glassware well from fats and other organic substances, an additive in solutions for liquid gas cleaning.
  • Solutions are widely used in toning photographs, a component of attenuating (reducing the density of a photographic image on a film) solutions in photography.

Potassium permanganate is also used as:

  • bleach for various materials,
  • to protect plants from fungal spores and pests,
  • accelerates the growth of vegetable crops, especially peas, tomatoes, cucumbers,
  • when extracting gold from ores,
  • oxidizing agent in organic chemistry and industrial synthesis (for example, for the oxidation of paraffins into carboxylic acids),
  • source of oxygen gas in laboratory experiments.
