Description
Denatured ethanol, ethyl alcohol
Ethanol denatured is a mixture of ethyl alcohol, denaturing and beneficial additives, and water. Designed for the production of non-food alcohol-containing products, including disinfectants; for use for technical purposes, as well as for export (Cas: 64-17-5).
Ethyl alcohol – physical properties
Ethyl alcohol is traditionally a transparent and light substance and has a characteristic pungent odor that is difficult to confuse. It has a sweetish taste and is very hot on the tongue.
The boiling point is only 79 degrees, so ethyl alcohol must be stored correctly – in a completely sealed container. If a container with alcohol is opened, the ethyl alcohol will evaporate, mix with air and this will lead to the formation of a dangerous air mixture.
Ethanol and its chemical properties
Such a substance safely belongs to chemical active reagents that have some properties that acids have. But in a weaker form. All this allows ethanol to interact with alkaline earth metals and further form ethylates.
If certain conditions are applied, then in reaction with carboxylic acids, alcohol can form much more complex esters – from oxalic to acetic acid.
Ethanol is valuable because it reacts well with sulfuric acid. If you heat such a composition to 120°C, you get diethyl ether even in laboratory conditions. You can go further, raise the temperature to 350 – 500°C, as in a test tube you already get ethylene.
Ethanol and areas of use.
Denatured ethanol (denatured alcohol) is often used for technical purposes. This is raw alcohol containing additives of a dye that colors ethyl alcohol in a blue-violet color, and special substances that give it an unpleasant odor and taste. Denatured alcohol is poisonous.
Ethyl alcohol is used to produce synthetic rubber, ethyl ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. Alcohol also dissolves many resins well: shellac, rosin, sandarac, phenol-formaldehyde resins (Bakelite A and novolacs), etc., so it is used as a solvent for many quick-drying alcohol varnishes. In the manufacture of nitro varnishes, ethyl alcohol is used as a diluent, since it does not dissolve nitrocellulose on its own.
Varnishes heavily diluted with ethanol are called polishes. Polishes are used in finishing works. These compounds are used to coat a wooden surface to achieve shine and preserve the structure of the wood.
