Description

Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol)

Isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol is a substance widely used in many industries. A simple chemical formula, an affordable price and excellent properties that are significant for various industries and areas of human activity – this is what distinguishes isopropyl alcohol.

In chemical terms, it is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. This is the simplest secondary alcohol of the aliphatic series, its formula is CH3CH(OH)CH3. The melting point is 89.5C, the boiling point is 82.4C, the density is 0.7851 g / cc, the lower explosive limit in air is 2.5% by volume (at 25C). It is miscible with water and organic solvents in all proportions and has all the properties of secondary fatty alcohols.

Application. Isopropyl alcohol

In industry, isopropyl alcohol is obtained mainly by sulfuric acid or direct hydration of propylene. The raw material is propane-propylene fraction of cracking gases, as well as propylene fractions of oil pyrolysis gases.

Isopropanol is in demand in the chemical, petroleum, medical, furniture, food, wood chemical, and perfume industries, as it is a good solvent for many essential oils, waxes, esters, alkaloids, and synthetic resins.

In the paint industry, this alcohol is used as an auxiliary solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, ethylcellulose, it is one of the most important auxiliary solvents for nitro-varnishes.

Isopropyl alcohol can be used to denature ethyl alcohol, in the preparation of brake and windshield washer fluids. As an antifreeze for car radiators.

Propanol-2 is also used for the synthesis of acetone and plastics. In particular, the production of low-density polyethylene and polypropylene.

In the oil refining industry, isopropanol is used as a solvent for urea. As an extractant in the process of selective extraction of naphthenic acids and as an additive to oils to improve their quality in terms of anti-corrosion properties and pour point. In aviation, it is used as a stabilizer for aviation gasoline and de-icer, and in the wood chemical industry – for the extraction of resins from wood.
