Oxalic acid is a dibasic saturated carboxylic acid. Its crystals are completely soluble in water and incompletely in ethyl and diethyl alcohol. The compound is insoluble in chloroform, benzene and petroleum ether. Forms salts and esters, which are called oxalates. In nature, this substance is found in many plants.

To obtain technical oxalic acid on an industrial scale, the most commonly used reaction is the oxidation of ethylene glycol with a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids in the presence of vanadium pentoxide or another catalyst. The compound is flammable and flammable in the settled state. It belongs to the 3rd hazard class according to the degree of impact on the body.

Oxalic acid is a chemical compound in the form of colorless crystals.

Oxalic acid is a highly toxic and poisonous chemical reagent. When working with it, it is necessary to use personal protective equipment (overalls, gloves and a mask), as well as strictly comply with fire safety requirements. The substance is packed in sealed polyethylene bags or plywood drums with a film liner. Acid must be stored in closed containers on pallets in well-ventilated areas. It is forbidden to transport and place it near food products.

Application. Oxalic acid

Oxalic acid has all the properties inherent in carboxylic acids, which leads to a very wide scope:

– production of pyrotechnics, dyes;
– cleaning of metal products from corrosion, scale, oxides;
– processing of textile and leather products;
– production of detergents, bleaches and disinfectants;
– aluminum anodizing;
– woodworking;
– galvanization and pickling;
– production of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen iodide;
– dissolution of cellulose and formation of luminous pigments;
– softening of water with a high salt content;
– precipitation of rare earth elements in the mining industry and analytical chemistry;
– whitening of sections in microscopy.
